Sound
An effective soundtrack and use of sound effects is an essential part of any film trailer, as it helps to establish the mood and atmosphere of the film in a way which is impossible to do with only visuals. Our team’s aim is to produce a suitable soundtrack for our trailer, which helps to establish the film’s genre of horror, by creating a sense of unease, tension and mystery. below I have included the different software and inspirations we will be using to achieve our goals.
inspirations
This trailer successfully uses sound to portray the themes and concepts of a horror film as well as the slasher sub-genre. for example, the use of a laid-back pop song to match with the trailer’s equilibrium fades away at the disequilibrium of the woman drowning, from then on we are presented with a conventional ambient backing track with drone sounds, which silences after fades to black. The trailer also builds up to it’s climax with faster paced music with a heartbeat sound. I feel this soundtrack perfectly captures todorov’s theory of equilibrium, and would work well in a slasher film, such as our own.

This trailer heavily relies on diegetic sounds such as heavy breathing and diegetic narrative, which has been used to explain the story instead of the conventional text transitions. The film’s branding is also made apparent through the faint whispering of ‘7 days.’ Our group could take inspiration from this, as our film has an emphasis on the number 15, which we can present in a similar manner.

Our Soundtrack
To produce and edit our soundtrack, we used Final cut pro. this software allowed us to layer the sounds and music i have downloaded, cut and separate the audio, and apply edits such as fades, volume adjustment, changing pitch/speed etc. in order to create an effective, singular background track.
our aim for this track was to produce a consistent, atmospheric track which builds a level of tension towards a final climax. by following the formulas of existing media products, we have achieved our goal, as this soundtrack creates a tense atmosphere, and would fit well alongside our visuals. |
Makeup & Costume
|
For the key makeup that we would like to use within our trailer and also for our posters and magazine front covers, I decided to do a large slash on the side of our volunteers neck which I had practiced on myself before hand and also researched lots of tutorials on how to perfect it. The video and images on the left show the final product that I created which also include the makeup I also put on his face and the dripping blood "15" sign, which is the title of our movie and a key aspect to the sub text of the trailer.

Inspiration
Since our film is within the sub genres of the slasher and psychological, blood and gory deep knife cuts are key to slasher movies and must be included in our trailer for the audience to be able to identify this iconic sub-genre. Therefore, I looked into many films which were a part of this and took inspiration from the makeup and costume used in each film. Furthermore, I have also included the tutorials which I also gained inspiration from and learnt how to perfect the makeup we have created to show the aim of what we wanted to achieve. Since i had never used liquid latex before I had to do some research into how to use it properly, since there are some possible side effects when using the product on skin, such as the irritation and allergic reactions it could potentially cause.

The film below is a classic slasher film that was released in the year 1980, the scene I have included is an iconic chase scene which involves a lot of gore and blood that can help highlight that makeup is an extremely important element to this sub-genre and a lot of effort must be put into this part of the film. The typical "slash" cuts are what make the sub genre known for and therefore is the reason why I decided to produce a deep cut wound on the volunteers neck.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is also another iconic slasher film that is full of extremely gory makeup as the main antagonist is a psychotic killer with a chainsaw. Therefore, there is a variety of deep knife wounds but also cut off limbs and decapitated bodies; which is not ideal for our specific trailer however we can take inspiration from the types of blood and shots where these cuts are included. The famous scene down below is taken from the 1974 original version of the film, where the characters are around a dinner table and the young female is tortured by the other males within the film.
